Message from the President Recent Annual General Meeting
This is my first message as President, after a gap of a number of years.
I was elected President for 2022 following the recent Annual General Meeting.

Special thanks are given to past president Dr Zetler, Julie put in
a tremendous effort, and brought to bear her experience and skills,
into her time as President in 2021 and this was much appreciated. I am
so pleased that Julie is continuing to support the Trust.
Thanks are also extended to Michael Book and Gillian Tegg who did not
stand for re-election, Their contributions while on the Committee
is much appreciated. I hope that they will continue their support
in other ways.
As set out by Dr Zetler in the President’s Report at the recent AGM,
Pandemics and natural disasters notwithstanding, the Trust is focused,
in addition to its normal important business, on some strategic concerns
and improvement of local amenities.
Strategic Issues
Following the public exhibition of the proposal, It is expected that
Hornsby Shire Council will shortly make a decision about its planning
for Byles Creek Valley. We will consider this proposal before deciding a
response.
Council also called for comment on a Community Strategic Plan. This will
act like a master plan for much of its future work. The Trust worked
very hard in submitting detailed comments on this major piece of work so
as to shape it to address our needs and I encourage you to read the

Also being undertaken by Council is its Comprehensive Heritage Study.
The Trust was pleased to see that a number of the comments which it (and
the Beecroft Cheltenham History Group) made on the Hornsby Thematic
History Study were incorporated and the approved document is now on the
Shire Council website.

Linked to this overarching Thematic History are Aboriginal and
Archaeological Heritage Studies that are reportedly well underway. Two
pieces of work that are current are a review of individual heritage
items (which for us, largely comprises homes) and a separate piece of
work explicitly identifying potential post 1940 heritage items. The
Trust has been asked to contribute to both of the latter two projects
and we hope to do so. Anything that you would like to contribute to our

Amenities
During lockdown so many of us made good use of the Railway Gardens at
Beecroft. The work that Council had previously done on these gardens,
and the work of the Garden Club, met a need and was clearly greatly
appreciated. What the Trust would like to see is better maintenance and
use of other public spaces that we have, such as the Village Green or
parks neighbouring where we live, like those of Fearnley Park or Lyne
Road. Other thinking is around what can we do to improve (and attract
more customers) to help make this a more pleasant locality and (as well
as supporting our retailers) in the Beecroft Shopping Village. We will
also start thinking about how we can work with the Epping Civic Trust
and Parramatta City Council to overcome the motorway being such a
barrier to residents. Again, all contributions to our thinking is
appreciated.
Events
The recent Epping Arts Fair was a welcome re-entry into public events for many of us . Our local Arden School of is celebrating its centenary this year.
Normally the Trust would hold a public ‘meet the candidates night’ for
any election but the logistics of such an event are a proving to be a
little more difficult this year. There is also the ANZAC Day event
at the Beecroft Cheltenham Cenotaph. The story of the Cenotaph is

ANZAC Day Service at the Beecroft War Memorial The
Rotary Club of Beecroft in association with the past members of the
Lions Club of Beecroft is once again holding an ANZAC Day Service on
Monday the 25th April 2022 at 3 pm at the Cenotaph, Wongala Crescent Beecroft. All are invited.
Autumn Walk. Sunday 1st May 2022 The Trust will hold its annual Autumn Walk on Sunday afternoon the 1st
May 2022. This year the walk will visit the Ray Park area. The
walk will commence at Cheltenham Oval netball courts at 2pm and proceed
via Kirkham St and Midson Rd to Ray and Hazelwood Parks. We will
return to Cheltenham Oval about 4pm via a slightly different route.
Meet the Candidates, Beecroft Cheltenham Civic Trust Public Meeting for the May 21st Federal Election. The
Trust is endeavoring to organise a public meeting and to secure
commitments from local candidates. However given the short lead
time we may not be successful. Our next eNews will have further details.
The Beecroft Garden Club. The garden club has busied itself working and improving the gardens in the Beecroft village.

Ray Park Heritage Group The Ray Park Heritage Group held a fascinating afternoon on March 26th
with presentations by Ron Cardwell on the work of Bendigo Community
Branch and ‘Legends’ together with Judith Dunn OAM on that iconic
Australian building material – corrugated iron. Well supported by
illustrations from all over Australia Judith had to constrain her talk
because she had so many interesting stories . Ray Park Heritage Group is
also partnering with Bendigo Bank to place plaques on local buildings
that will identify local ‘legends’.

Byles Creek Valley The
Trust was very pleased to hear recently, that the Byles Creek Valley
Union Inc. met with Isaac Spencer from the Epping office of our State
member Dominic Perrottet.
At this meeting they were assured that earlier advice given at a Civic
Trust public meeting by Mr Perrottet was still accurate. There
will be State funds set aside for costs associated with the protection
of Byles Creek land.
We look forward to an announcement of what this will entail.
